AI The Power of Presence: Why Real Connection Still Matters For School Counsellors

Even though I officially retired almost a decade ago, I still work on contracts and continue to spend time in schools as a counsellor. And honestly, there’s nothing quite like sitting with a student and helping them feel truly seen, heard, understood, and cared about.
When a student says, “Thank you for really listening… no one has done that in a long time,” it’s a powerful reminder of why this work matters. Those moments — real, human, one-to-one connections — are where healing, trust, and growth take root. They’re the kind of moments that can’t be replaced.
Even in a world where some young people may turn to digital tools or chatbots, most still want and need face-to-face time with a caring adult. Genuine human connection remains essential — and I believe it always will be.
As AI continues to evolve, school counsellors may find ways to use these tools to enhance and support their work. But it’s critical that we stay informed about emerging research, new technologies, and the ethical considerations that come with them. Balancing innovation with integrity will be key.
For now, to every school counsellor out there: keep doing what you do. Keep showing up, keep listening, and keep offering hope. The well-being of young people — their sense of belonging, safety, and possibility — depends on it.
